D-Box seats with Dune Pt 2

Derek Johnson and Nicholas Killian delve into a candid discussion on their experiences with D-Box theater seats while weaving in a broader narrative about the evolution of movie-watching experiences, technology integration in theaters, and the implications of these changes for audiences and the film industry. They contrast D-Box's motion seats with traditional and 4D cinema experiences, discussing the technology's potential and shortcomings. The conversation extends to the broader context of film production locations, industry challenges, and personal anecdotes related to celebrity encounters and family perspectives on Hollywood fame. This is film center your number one show for real entertainment industry news no

Speaker:

fluff all facts Here are your anchors derrick johnson ii and nicholas killian

Speaker:

I'm derrick johnson ii.

Speaker:

I'm nicholas killian and we're talking about today nicholas today.

Speaker:

We are talking about dune part two Yes, but not only are we talking

Speaker:

about dune part two, but what else are we talking about today dj?

Speaker:

We're talking about something interesting.

Speaker:

They're called d box seats as you guys know here at film center, we're not

Speaker:

really we don't really review movies.

Speaker:

It's not really what we do however, the reason why we do bring up dune part two is

Speaker:

because of first of all 84 million dollars in the box office right now, right?

Speaker:

Student better than Wiping the floor with every other movie that's out right now.

Speaker:

Just wiping the floor just absolutely Destroying.

Speaker:

Dune part two there's a scene where Timothy Chalamet is

Speaker:

just making out with himself.

Speaker:

That would took a lot of scenes in the movie.

Speaker:

It's at over 200 million dollars right now.

Speaker:

It must been that weekend.

Speaker:

I saw that was 84 million then The thing, the reason why we're really talking

Speaker:

about it though is the D Box seats.

Speaker:

Me and Nicholas.

Speaker:

And the special Dune Popcorn Bucket.

Speaker:

So we'll talk about the popcorn bucket first and just get that out the way.

Speaker:

The Dune Popcorn Bucket.

Speaker:

Alright, here's the fiasco with that.

Speaker:

Y'all knew y'all was wrong when you made that.

Speaker:

Alright, I'm gonna drop down the barrier for a second.

Speaker:

You guys know you shouldn't have done that.

Speaker:

You guys knew you wanted viral marketing.

Speaker:

You knew you, oh, we're going to make the top a hole.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

But it's a worm.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

You know what you were doing.

Speaker:

And if you didn't, this is again, I will say this to them blue in the face and

Speaker:

it has nothing to do with race, but you definitely need a black guy when you're

Speaker:

making decisions, at least consult one.

Speaker:

Because, I guarantee you, as an African American male, my first

Speaker:

thought would have been like first of all, it shows how out of touch a lot

Speaker:

of these big movie executives are.

Speaker:

Because if you genuinely didn't think that it looked like what exactly

Speaker:

it does you're not getting any.

Speaker:

For one, and then for two, what?

Speaker:

I guess they don't go on the internet or nothing.

Speaker:

Or I guess they're just not people just or males or something.

Speaker:

I don't know because apparently People are asking for the Dune popcorn bucket.

Speaker:

Hold the popcorn extra butter.

Speaker:

Yeah, exactly We even saw a video that was like, yes Yeah Dune popcorn

Speaker:

bucket hold the popcorn extra butter.

Speaker:

Yeah, So it looks like, oh my gosh, and here's the craziest part.

Speaker:

If you would have had a black guy on there, that black guy would have been

Speaker:

like what the heck are y'all doing?

Speaker:

Also, there was no women?

Speaker:

Yeah, was there not a woman here to help decide?

Speaker:

Oh, you know what?

Speaker:

It probably was.

Speaker:

It probably was it could have possibly been that there was a woman involved,

Speaker:

but like in a lot of, like in a lot of boardrooms the men just only have her

Speaker:

there as a hire and don't listen to her.

Speaker:

Because I feel like a woman would have probably said hey I

Speaker:

don't think you should do this.

Speaker:

Clearly this was something done by some people, some old rich

Speaker:

people who were out of touch.

Speaker:

Yeah, But anyway, yeah, so let's talk about the D box seats.

Speaker:

Let's talk about the D box seats.

Speaker:

So I Was the one so we were like first of all Let's go ahead and we gotta call

Speaker:

out DJ for being a gaslighter first of all Because yeah, I had not seen all

Speaker:

of dune part one Which means he hadn't seen it But this man was trying to make

Speaker:

it seem like I hadn't seen any of it.

Speaker:

So this man says My this man, nicholas specifically says hey, i've only

Speaker:

seen the last half of dune I'm the part of the first part of dune part

Speaker:

one and i'm like, okay then you haven't seen the movie Skill I have.

Speaker:

No you haven't.

Speaker:

You seem it's like saying oh, I got a 50 on a test, so I know all

Speaker:

the knowledge, and I should deserve to said I knew all the knowledge.

Speaker:

You were trying to make it seem like I had never seen Dune before.

Speaker:

Because I was asking him questions about, I was like, yeah, because, you're

Speaker:

gonna need to know XYZ for the movie.

Speaker:

For Dune Part 2, which he would not have known if he hadn't seen the beginning part

Speaker:

of the movie, the most important part.

Speaker:

I understand what you're saying.

Speaker:

And I never said that I knew it all.

Speaker:

But you are trying to make it seem like I had never seen any of it.

Speaker:

You don't, you didn't know, you didn't know the name of the house of Treyus.

Speaker:

You didn't know what the big flying back guy was.

Speaker:

Doesn't mean I didn't see it though.

Speaker:

Anyway, so to see Dune 2, he would need to know this knowledge.

Speaker:

So being the friend that I am, I have Dune.

Speaker:

So we watched the first 45 minutes of Dune.

Speaker:

And then when you started to recognize I think you said that when they're

Speaker:

sitting at the table, that's what we started watching last time.

Speaker:

So when they were there, which I don't think it's exactly half, I honestly

Speaker:

think, I think that's like a, maybe like a quarter or like a third into the movie.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So really you did see most of it.

Speaker:

But I'm glad we have that on the record now Yeah, most is not all of

Speaker:

it anyway So but anyway saying that so that's we got done with that.

Speaker:

We want to go see Dune part 2 right so We were looking at we were like,

Speaker:

okay, let's go see it and at first we were looking at Dolby, but then I saw

Speaker:

something called D Box, and I asked DJ, I was like, Hey, what's D Box?

Speaker:

And he was like, I don't know.

Speaker:

Let's look it up.

Speaker:

So I looked it up, and D Box is basically like a ride in the movie theater.

Speaker:

So if anyone's ever been to Shrek 4D, Or Kung Fu Panda 4D, I think

Speaker:

it is now, in Universal Studios.

Speaker:

Or really any 4D movie where the chairs are moving around,

Speaker:

as you're watching the screen.

Speaker:

Now in 4D Rise, they usually do stuff with water and things like that.

Speaker:

We did not experience any sort of elementals.

Speaker:

Like with water, or scent, or things like that.

Speaker:

But it was But the seats did move, and vibrate, and there was only two

Speaker:

rows in this theater that had it.

Speaker:

And to me, it seems like it's still in this very experimental stages, to

Speaker:

get people back into the theaters.

Speaker:

I probably wouldn't do it again, because Damn, though.

Speaker:

It wasn't, just, it's not The technology is not there yet

Speaker:

enough to warrant a second time.

Speaker:

Here's the issue.

Speaker:

The issue is, so first of all, I love the idea.

Speaker:

The idea is phenomenal.

Speaker:

Because you're getting an experience that you couldn't

Speaker:

get watching it at home, right?

Speaker:

With the seats moving and stuff like that.

Speaker:

In fact, the theater we went to only two rows had it.

Speaker:

And there was only three of us, like literally everyone

Speaker:

else was in regular seats.

Speaker:

And it was like, Us and one other person in these D Box seats Now I will say

Speaker:

this they do have different levels of intensity, which I was like, I like

Speaker:

that just we put them all the way up.

Speaker:

We were like we want the full intensity full experience, right?

Speaker:

Because you know Some ships when they turn to the left it like moves to the

Speaker:

left some ships when it turns to the right And we like people are going

Speaker:

over cliffs to tilt you downwards Like you feel like the vibrations like

Speaker:

when someone's shooting weapons and stuff I mean if they really get these

Speaker:

D Box seats You the technology down?

Speaker:

Dude, Star Wars would be amazing.

Speaker:

I guarantee you we will start flocking back to the theaters.

Speaker:

Guaranteed.

Speaker:

Here's part of the issue.

Speaker:

Here's why people like 4D movies over Universal Studios, and not

Speaker:

the D Box seats in the theater.

Speaker:

And I had this issue when I was watching it.

Speaker:

4D movies are built around the, with the knowledge of knowing that

Speaker:

the seats are going to do that.

Speaker:

So there's not a whole bunch of places where the seats

Speaker:

are just still and stagnant.

Speaker:

Dune has too many quiet Scenes where nothing is really happening, but

Speaker:

talking to have that kind of thing.

Speaker:

If it was like Dunkirk Dunkirk or 1917, that would've been awesome 'cause you

Speaker:

would've so much consistent movement.

Speaker:

But it's weird to have your chair vibrate and move to the left and move to the

Speaker:

right and tilt up and then tilt down and then for it just be still for 20 minutes

Speaker:

and then go back to tilting up and then it turns and all this stuff, and then

Speaker:

still for another 20 minutes and then it would, whenever it's still, it's just hum.

Speaker:

It's just like hum.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's still hums.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It just hums Anyway, it does little things here and there.

Speaker:

I think it's the battery that like makes it hum.

Speaker:

Right or something and here's the other issue in 4d Some of the speakers are

Speaker:

like near are within the seats too.

Speaker:

So for 4d movies you have the Dolby 5.

Speaker:

1 So you have the surround sound 5.

Speaker:

1 But you also have things like, the elementals with the smells.

Speaker:

You also have some of the speakers in the actual seating.

Speaker:

So it's like closer to you, you feel like you're in the movie, right?

Speaker:

And if that's the point of the D Box seats either you need to do it all

Speaker:

the way or don't do it at all, or else it's going to flop in his head.

Speaker:

That, that's that's the thing.

Speaker:

I would actually, I actually want to watch Dune 2 Part 2 without the D Box seats.

Speaker:

One of the things that I was looking up on the D Box seats and like the

Speaker:

technology is so like you were saying, with 4D, it's, completely immersive

Speaker:

with elementals and stuff like that.

Speaker:

D Box focuses mainly on just the motion.

Speaker:

Just the motion, just the it's not enough.

Speaker:

I don't think it's enough.

Speaker:

It might be enough if there was a full range of motion for the D Box seats.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

The D Box seats did not move as much as a 4D.

Speaker:

Seat would right now for these seats.

Speaker:

They're still you're still in a stationary theater.

Speaker:

All right, it's not I don't I said jimmy neutron because back in the day

Speaker:

was a jimmy neutron ride But I think it's I think it's like transformers

Speaker:

and spider man now universal like that.

Speaker:

They move Is it oh screen?

Speaker:

Or king kong, I think it used to be those But it's like a car that moves, right?

Speaker:

It's not like that.

Speaker:

The the 4D movies, you're in a stationary seat like you

Speaker:

would be in a regular theater.

Speaker:

So that the seat's moving and stuff like that.

Speaker:

The issue is that, with D Box, they're just playing around with it.

Speaker:

And they're doing it just a little bit, which Because they're not

Speaker:

doing, going far enough with the idea, it just comes off as annoying.

Speaker:

And distracting to the movie.

Speaker:

Yeah, it comes off as a little distracting and it also doesn't justify the price.

Speaker:

No, it doesn't because they charge you what is it twice more?

Speaker:

Yeah, twice more and the thing was is it was it just feels like it

Speaker:

shakes you the whole time Yeah, now me and Nicholas got to see it.

Speaker:

We didn't have to pay for the ticket, right?

Speaker:

No, they gave them to us.

Speaker:

But again, I mean they want our honest review I mean it was just wasn't enough.

Speaker:

It's like maybe if they When I say turning, it doesn't really turn.

Speaker:

The seats really just tilted to the left, tilted to the right, tilted

Speaker:

up, tilted down, and then Shaked a little bit, and that was about it.

Speaker:

And so it's it was just like annoying.

Speaker:

It's seriously, the first time my seat started vibrating, I thought at first

Speaker:

that someone was kicking me behind me.

Speaker:

Yeah, I, listen, I'm not gonna, but also, I'm also not gonna sit here and

Speaker:

say that it did not add to the movie.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

It definitely added to the movie it definitely added to the experience.

Speaker:

It added to the action scenes to me.

Speaker:

I like the surround sound, because it's, not only is it surround

Speaker:

sound in the movie theater, it's surround sound in your chair.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's just how it's supposed to be.

Speaker:

Not all the chairs had them.

Speaker:

For 4D movies, it's there's speakers in I think, every chair.

Speaker:

For this one, they have it, there's like these long bars that are next

Speaker:

to the seats, that are behind the seats where the sounds come from.

Speaker:

Ah, gotcha.

Speaker:

Which is why it might have sounded like that.

Speaker:

But, yeah, I enjoyed it, I thought it was, I thought it was good.

Speaker:

I didn't, it's not like I it's not worth the, it's Not worth the price.

Speaker:

The technology is not worth the price that they're probably going to charge you.

Speaker:

Here's the issue.

Speaker:

Either you have Movie tickets are already super expensive now.

Speaker:

That's why people To then double the price to do D Box seats?

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Especially if you're seeing the same movie everyone else is sitting for.

Speaker:

The guy two rows ahead of me paid half price for the same movie I'm seeing.

Speaker:

Just cause my seat likes to vibrate?

Speaker:

I just turn my phone to vibrate and have some people call me,

Speaker:

like what you talking about?

Speaker:

But here's the issue I think that is, is, actually here's the solution.

Speaker:

Don't have D Box seats, don't have two rows of D Box seats and then

Speaker:

a whole bunch of regular seats.

Speaker:

Have a D Box theater.

Speaker:

Where it's actually 4D immersive with the whole thing, with like smells and

Speaker:

like elementals and stuff like that.

Speaker:

And then have a regular theater.

Speaker:

You, they should not be in the same theater.

Speaker:

You just have one special theater.

Speaker:

That you watch these movies in.

Speaker:

You either have it in, have it that version.

Speaker:

Like they did with Gran Turismo, where we saw the 180 degrees, right?

Speaker:

There was a special theater that was built for this different experience, right?

Speaker:

And if you want to see regular, you go to the other theater.

Speaker:

And that's not like it's a separate building, it's just a

Speaker:

different, just a different theater.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's what they should have done.

Speaker:

They, I, I get why they're doing it, this is the way they're testing it out.

Speaker:

But.

Speaker:

You're testing a inferior product that people are not going to

Speaker:

like because it's inferior.

Speaker:

You need to test it out fully, and don't act like you don't have the money.

Speaker:

All right, Hollywood people, you do have the money.

Speaker:

You just don't like spending it, but if you want people to come back to

Speaker:

your theaters, you better act like it.

Speaker:

Yeah, I It did the cost is not justifiable.

Speaker:

It's not.

Speaker:

It's not justifiable.

Speaker:

I think you would be better off Especially in a recession.

Speaker:

I think you'd be better off just going to it, seeing it

Speaker:

in Dolby, and just doing that.

Speaker:

Because some of the parts, like you said, Dune wasn't I understand

Speaker:

why you did it for Dune, but like you said, there's too many lulls.

Speaker:

There's too many parts where it's You know completely nothing going on and to

Speaker:

justify the cost of the seat they put it's like vibrating and it's all this kind of

Speaker:

stuff and it takes you out the movie a little bit, but It's because you don't

Speaker:

want to okay I don't want it to vibrate, 10 times and then i'd spent two times the

Speaker:

money to see this chair Vibrate I wanted twice, you know say but at the same time

Speaker:

it's like I think also part of the reason what part of the issue Was the controller?

Speaker:

So they programmed the seats obviously to do certain motions and stuff like that at

Speaker:

the same synced up with the movie, right?

Speaker:

Okay, whoever was in charge of doing this need to take some lessons from people down

Speaker:

at some music parts because Their tilts weren't like exactly like they're supposed

Speaker:

to be like they weren't like they don't need to be done for sci fi movies They

Speaker:

should be exclusively for action movies.

Speaker:

There's a whole bunch of stuff going on.

Speaker:

Kung Fu Panda would've been great.

Speaker:

Indie box Yeah, kung fu panda would be great in the box.

Speaker:

We even asked him we asked him because Kung fu panda is one of my favorite

Speaker:

dreamworks franchises I even asked him I said hey When we got the dbox seats for

Speaker:

dune part two was like hey Are you guys going to be doing dbox seats for kung

Speaker:

fu panda 4 and they were like no I was like that's so it's only for this movie.

Speaker:

Then it's a waste of time.

Speaker:

You just programmed in these seats, you know i'm like you wasted all these money

Speaker:

For these two row seats to where you have to charge, regular people twice the price.

Speaker:

You better be using them.

Speaker:

Or at least trying to push them in every movie.

Speaker:

It's like I'm sure if I watched Fast and Furious with D Box seats,

Speaker:

that would have been crazy awesome.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I would have really enjoyed that experience because there's so

Speaker:

much stuff going on, plus cars.

Speaker:

You're driving around in cars so often it's you feel like the vibrations

Speaker:

of the car are like speeding down the highway or something like that.

Speaker:

That would've been great.

Speaker:

Or war movies could have been really cool.

Speaker:

Something that has an obscene amount of action in it.

Speaker:

Also I think what, like if someone said Hey, we should go see a marriage

Speaker:

story in Dbox seeds and be like, okay, so I don't wanna talk to you anymore.

Speaker:

Lose my number, right?

Speaker:

I think also what they were trying to do if I were to think like them

Speaker:

for a second is they I Don't know if it's they didn't have the technology.

Speaker:

They didn't want to spend the money But the thing is that

Speaker:

you don't want to have it to

Speaker:

Lawsuit like You don't want to have it too lawsuit worthy where you

Speaker:

have a potential for your customers to get hurt Because you're always

Speaker:

going to have people That's true.

Speaker:

I didn't think about that Yeah that are How could they potentially

Speaker:

hurt themselves because mind you?

Speaker:

It's not you could have the 90 percent of people or the 99 percent of people that

Speaker:

do it correctly and have it like a, and themselves have it like a rollercoaster

Speaker:

ride and exactly how they want to do it.

Speaker:

But it's not 1% who can sue, but it's that 1% or just one person.

Speaker:

Just one person needs to, out of millions, one person out millions needs

Speaker:

to get hurt before it's all shut down.

Speaker:

They sue them and they're like, okay, yeah, now I have a back

Speaker:

injury, or now I have whatever it is.

Speaker:

And then that's it.

Speaker:

So again.

Speaker:

The part that frustrates me the most is that the technology is already there.

Speaker:

We've been doing 4D movies since, I used to go to 4D movies when I was like 5.

Speaker:

The technology's been there too long for you guys to not have done this properly.

Speaker:

And, no one, you can't really sue those 4D movies when they do all that stuff

Speaker:

in there because they say, if you're pregnant or you have a No, you can't

Speaker:

because they tell you if you're pregnant or you have a pre existing condition

Speaker:

or like some sort of heart condition or whatever You're not allowed to go in.

Speaker:

If there's anything wrong with you in general, you're not allowed

Speaker:

to be there basically, right?

Speaker:

And and then it's up to your responsibility and they say that

Speaker:

publicly and often and like over the speakers and stuff like that

Speaker:

At least at work we use the part.

Speaker:

That is one of the most replayed things ever If you have any pre existing

Speaker:

conditions that could cause you to be injured by this then You're not allowed

Speaker:

to get on or if you're pregnant or if you could be pregnant They even say

Speaker:

if you are pregnant if you could be pregnant, so You know with 4d movies

Speaker:

They treat it like it's a ride, right?

Speaker:

That's how they should have treated in the theater as if it's a ride What if

Speaker:

it's not financially feasible to do that?

Speaker:

That's not our problem.

Speaker:

They would because they would have to charge too much money with us.

Speaker:

That's not our problem They gotta figure it out Again, the technology,

Speaker:

it's not I would agree with you if I was like, Oh they have to do

Speaker:

all the research on how to do it.

Speaker:

We've been doing it for at least 20 years.

Speaker:

You just literally just do what they're doing.

Speaker:

How many times you got to watch Captain EO at Disney before you figure it out?

Speaker:

Captain EO was made in the 1970s by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and

Speaker:

was a 4D movie that had the 3D, they invented a new 3D camera to do it and they

Speaker:

had all the shakes and stuff like that.

Speaker:

And the, and those seats at the, they don't do Captain EO now.

Speaker:

So if you're listening to this, you would have to listen to this like

Speaker:

what, like five years ago to know what I'm talking about for Captain EO.

Speaker:

There's a lot of people who are, if you're not in elementary school,

Speaker:

you're gonna know what Captain EO is.

Speaker:

But, That Michael Jackson experience right but those seats down because I used to

Speaker:

be one of my favorite rides when I worked at Disney down At Disney World, they're

Speaker:

like bolted to the ground So all that reverberations you feel are actually from

Speaker:

like the ground itself like the seats They didn't have the technology to make

Speaker:

those but it's a great movie and it works with those seats and everything, right?

Speaker:

So the technologies that was the 70s when that was created.

Speaker:

So now I gotta think about this 70s 80s 90s Thousands, like bro, like that's

Speaker:

you saw something that's 50 years ago.

Speaker:

Yeah, like what is the excuse for you not knowing how to do this property?

Speaker:

And we can't act like technology that technology has gotten way

Speaker:

cheaper way cheaper for you to get into universal studios.

Speaker:

You gotta buy a ticket, right?

Speaker:

tickets like 100 bucks Sure, let's say it's 100.

Speaker:

No, let's say I think let's say it's 150 dollars.

Speaker:

Let's say that 150.

Speaker:

Okay, you're not gonna pay 150 to see a movie.

Speaker:

Like you're just not.

Speaker:

No, you're just not.

Speaker:

But if your favorite ride is Captain EO, you'll pay 150 to get in.

Speaker:

So why would people do that?

Speaker:

Because also they're served food and a whole bunch of other things.

Speaker:

I think that if movie theaters treated it more oh, it's like it

Speaker:

used to be back in the day that people go to the movies because they

Speaker:

couldn't see their screen at home.

Speaker:

But now they can the only reason we went to the movies was

Speaker:

because they were an experience.

Speaker:

They couldn't get at home It's about the experience.

Speaker:

It's not about the movie.

Speaker:

Of course, right?

Speaker:

Yeah, so if you they can Up their game.

Speaker:

I mean at a music parts are based on not showing movies, but are based

Speaker:

on immersive experiences, right?

Speaker:

That's what they should be basing it on There shouldn't even be an amc.

Speaker:

That shouldn't if i'm being serious amc regal If Disney was smart, they'd buy

Speaker:

out AMC and they'd trade out all those theaters and make them all D box seats.

Speaker:

Yeah, that would Or Disney have their own I mean they have down

Speaker:

and not down to this is Disney.

Speaker:

Because I remember I'm not in Florida.

Speaker:

I'm in California right now.

Speaker:

I'm talking about Universal sorry, Universal Studios CityWalk, right?

Speaker:

They got AMC over there.

Speaker:

I would just rip out all the regular half well, at least half of them.

Speaker:

Rip out half the theaters.

Speaker:

But and you want to test it out.

Speaker:

Maybe just one just change it to complete deluxe and They would just

Speaker:

start making money Because they already had the technology now AMC Regal cinemas

Speaker:

Carmack cinemas they have to invest in getting that technology and perfecting

Speaker:

it The music bars already have it.

Speaker:

It's plug and play baby.

Speaker:

It's plug and play money The theaters are trying to catch up to what you guys have

Speaker:

been doing for 50 years What do you think is the issue you think they're scared

Speaker:

it's scared money ego Pride and ego.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Same the only there's only three issues in our industry heal them.

Speaker:

Pride and ego is one i'll combine those two The second is money but

Speaker:

that's usually not an issue for them.

Speaker:

But like that greed I should say more it's more like greed And then

Speaker:

the third issue is Just laziness Yeah, just straight up being lazy.

Speaker:

I, we're usually not so crass on these on, on the show, but, this is

Speaker:

just, I, just calling it how I see it, yeah, it, I think that a lot of

Speaker:

them are Have the ability and want to rest on the laurels of the past.

Speaker:

Especially now because the industry Very traditional.

Speaker:

Especially now because the industry has gotten so restrictive and so

Speaker:

high risk in terms of needing profit.

Speaker:

To the point where studios can't even afford to make money here in California.

Speaker:

All that like I don't care who you're talking to a lot of those remember in

Speaker:

burbank there used to be those big sound stages right next to the vines Yeah, right

Speaker:

that's over there across from the warner brothers studios and the universe studios

Speaker:

right next to that vines They used to be all those big sound stages right across

Speaker:

the street And right next to bb's and that apartment complex is over there now.

Speaker:

They're all torn down and gone Yeah, they a lot of it moved to the south

Speaker:

So everything out of California, California is become so expensive.

Speaker:

The rich billionaires look forward to live here.

Speaker:

We had a we have a big gigantic studio in Baton Rouge, it's called

Speaker:

Celtic studios and it's gigantic.

Speaker:

It's huge.

Speaker:

I think they built it like maybe 10, 12 years ago.

Speaker:

And it's right next to Costco.

Speaker:

It's right next to a Costco, and they film a lot of movies there.

Speaker:

They they go to Georgia, right?

Speaker:

Film a lot of movies there.

Speaker:

Nashville.

Speaker:

Nashville, they film a lot of movies there.

Speaker:

Literally anywhere but California it makes sense to film.

Speaker:

Because you think about your three biggest expenses.

Speaker:

Extras, food, location.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, and location here is just so expensive like location Is cheap in the

Speaker:

south the food is fantastic because it is the south and it's cheaper And extras

Speaker:

aren't complaining about stuff They're just happy just to be in the movie

Speaker:

compared to here where they're like, oh you gotta pay me Even more money because

Speaker:

I was basically just greed over here.

Speaker:

There's too many greedy people in california Also people in the south

Speaker:

are just happy to be in the movie and they're not trying to oh let me get the

Speaker:

director to look at me and then they're just like they don't care about that.

Speaker:

Oh cool I'm in a movie cool, whatever.

Speaker:

Yeah and one of the biggest things one of the Biggest things bigger

Speaker:

than all of those is the fact that Nobody cares who you are in the south.

Speaker:

That's true.

Speaker:

Around here, people like, they love, oh, by name and what I've done.

Speaker:

Around the south, though, you could say oh, you could be Steven Spielberg

Speaker:

and go to Wyrmfirm, Mursboro.

Speaker:

Seriously.

Speaker:

Walk around, no one's going to know who you are, and if you walk up to,

Speaker:

you could walk up to some kids who are studying media at the local college to

Speaker:

be news anchors or something like that, and say, hey, I'm Steven Spielberg.

Speaker:

They'd be like Can we help you yeah, what they that's what a lot of the

Speaker:

celeb especially When they come to Louisiana, yeah, New Orleans Baton

Speaker:

Rouge That's one of the things that they say they like the most is the food Is

Speaker:

incredible and the people leave them all like Tom Cruise used to go to the

Speaker:

Whole Foods in Baton Rouge a lot, right?

Speaker:

And Tom Cruise was basically talking about the fact that everybody would just

Speaker:

leave him alone Like he'd be the one ordering his pizza in the line at Whole

Speaker:

Foods and like jumping over it trying to see What's going on with his food,

Speaker:

even though the glass is see through Yeah that's what they were saying.

Speaker:

Yeah, but I have heard that But the thing is yeah, nobody no nobody cares

Speaker:

because i'll tell you why the only reason people care about who your name

Speaker:

is and what you do is because that's The industry of the city or the industry

Speaker:

of the state is entertainment, right?

Speaker:

The industry in the south is farming and construction farming construction

Speaker:

Like a lot of blue collar jobs, right?

Speaker:

So for you to impress them, you have to say Oh, hey, I'm the CEO John Deere.

Speaker:

Then they're gonna be like, whoa!

Speaker:

Oh I'm the president and CEO of Exxon Mobil.

Speaker:

They're going, oh my gosh!

Speaker:

Oh I'm the head of all the Nissan factories that are here.

Speaker:

They'll be like, oh my gosh, that's crazy!

Speaker:

If you say, oh, I'm Tom Cruise, the famous actor, they'll be like,

Speaker:

Oh, cool, I think I might have seen you in a movie, yeah, maybe.

Speaker:

Yeah, okay.

Speaker:

Cool.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Our parents are from the South.

Speaker:

What is their reaction to when we talk about, Oh, I met this

Speaker:

person, I met that person.

Speaker:

What do your parents usually say?

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Yeah, my parents, They don't really care.

Speaker:

They don't care at all.

Speaker:

I remember when I met one of my Filmmaking heroes Ryan Coogler.

Speaker:

And I have big respect for him.

Speaker:

I'm very inspired by a lot of his work.

Speaker:

I have a picture of him and me as, I had a picture of him and

Speaker:

me as one of my when I met him at an award show for the first time.

Speaker:

It was on my second, third time meeting him, but we took a picture

Speaker:

together and I had that as a profile picture of mine, right?

Speaker:

My mom's gonna call me and be like, who is that?

Speaker:

I said, what?

Speaker:

She goes, what is that, a cousin on your dad's side I don't know about?

Speaker:

I was like, that's Ryan Coogler.

Speaker:

She goes, You said that like I'm supposed to have some reaction to

Speaker:

what you're saying and I'm like he directed Black Panther mom and

Speaker:

he's she's and she's Oh, okay.

Speaker:

So why did well, okay.

Speaker:

Why is he in this picture with you?

Speaker:

She's from alabama, right?

Speaker:

She's like, all right, cool I'm like, you know the movie black panther.

Speaker:

She goes.

Speaker:

Yeah, of course I do.

Speaker:

Have you seen the movie?

Speaker:

Yeah, is it a good movie?

Speaker:

Yeah, I like that movie.

Speaker:

I was like he also did creed.

Speaker:

She goes.

Speaker:

I do michael b.

Speaker:

Jordan So what did he do?

Speaker:

And she's i don't like he was the director and writer and

Speaker:

she's Oh, so he knows michael b.

Speaker:

Jordan Yes, ma And she's Okay yeah, good for him.

Speaker:

I still don't understand why he's in this profile picture.

Speaker:

Like, why do you have him in your He's yeah I don't understand.

Speaker:

I was like, seriously?

Speaker:

And then I remember Anytime I talk to my dad about anything, I'll say Oh,

Speaker:

he'll be like, oh, what are you doing?

Speaker:

And I'll be like, oh, I'm gonna be on set today I'm gonna be

Speaker:

there for X amount of hours.

Speaker:

Do you want to know about the location we're shooting?

Speaker:

This location is literally a spaceship.

Speaker:

And so what we're doing in this location, but that's he, my dad always

Speaker:

says, he goes, that's Chinese to me.

Speaker:

Which is translation from, now he's not from the south, he

Speaker:

has been living in Tennessee.

Speaker:

I'm from the south.

Speaker:

For as long as I've been alive, he's been living there.

Speaker:

But he's from Maryland.

Speaker:

But to him, when he says that's Chinese to me, that means he doesn't understand.

Speaker:

And it means I should move on to a different topic.

Speaker:

My, my dad will say, that's Oh, okay.

Speaker:

And, or he'll say it's good work if you can get it right.

Speaker:

And that's cause I'll tell him what I'm doing.

Speaker:

Oh, I'm doing this.

Speaker:

I'm doing that.

Speaker:

And he's must be nice or good work if you get it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They have zero reaction.

Speaker:

They don't, he does not in the slightest, just no care.

Speaker:

Because I'm like that, he was like, Nicholas, cool, whatever,

Speaker:

but That'd be cool for you but, like, how does this pay my bills?

Speaker:

He's but what does this have to do with paying bills?

Speaker:

It's it does pay bills, but we're being creative.

Speaker:

And it's congratulations.

Speaker:

Yeah okay.

Speaker:

Alright, like Next, next subject.

Speaker:

You said that like I was supposed to have some reaction to it, I don't care.

Speaker:

No, no one cares.
