Speaker:

Studio News.

Speaker:

My name is Nicholas Killian.

Speaker:

And I'm Derrick Johnson ii.

Speaker:

Awesome, awesome.

Speaker:

So what are we gonna talk about today, Derrick?

Speaker:

Today we're talking about the the Mario movie.

Speaker:

Man.

Speaker:

It has been crushing at the box office rushing.

Speaker:

It is we are currently recording this on the 28th of April.

Speaker:

And it's been out for a little bit now and right now.

Speaker:

At Box Office, it's sitting at 912 million according to the numbers.com.

Speaker:

This is just movie's breaking records.

Speaker:

It's huge right now and it only came out on April the fifth.

Speaker:

It's so wild.

Speaker:

It's actually ranked number one by the numbers on top,

Speaker:

based on game Weekend domestic.

Speaker:

So that means video games.

Speaker:

Movies based on a video game mm-hmm.

Speaker:

For domestic and ranks number one.

Speaker:

When it came on the fifth, it's opening box office was $146,361,865.

Speaker:

God dang, bruh Woo.

Speaker:

That's a lot of money for one weekend.

Speaker:

It's a lot of money and part of its popularity, is there's nothing

Speaker:

else really to watch for children.

Speaker:

Right now it doesn't have a lot of competition.

Speaker:

Not a lot, a whole lot of competition.

Speaker:

But today we're talking about ma an age old rivalry.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Not only are we gonna bring up Mar talking about Mario, we're also

Speaker:

talking about Sonic the Hedgehog.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Sonic the Hedgehog is announcing that is gonna be a Sonic Three.

Speaker:

And I gotta be honest, we have a bit of a, a controversial Opinion here.

Speaker:

I think Sonic is gonna outlast Mario.

Speaker:

I know.

Speaker:

Yeah, I know.

Speaker:

I know that a lot of people are gonna say, oh, how is that possible?

Speaker:

Well, all I gotta say is the main reason why is because it needs

Speaker:

way more support to reach the same audience level as Sonic the Hedgehog.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Here's my thing.

Speaker:

The rivalry started way back in the day.

Speaker:

The Marvel eighties.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Not Marvel.

Speaker:

I met Mario.

Speaker:

Mario came out at 85, right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Signed the Hedgehog 91.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Some of the hedgehog was, no one thought that someone could get rid of Mario.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

There was no Right.

Speaker:

Mario had no conversation.

Speaker:

Then when Sonic came out and blew it out, the water, let's not pretend

Speaker:

like this movie doesn't exist because there's a Sonic, Sonic two.

Speaker:

Right, right.

Speaker:

After Sonic was popular and they was announced that there was gonna be

Speaker:

assigned to, of course, that's when Mario was like, okay, we're gonna make

Speaker:

an animated movie with Illumination.

Speaker:

They have it Now, this is not the first Mario movie.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

There, there was a 1993 live action movie that they had.

Speaker:

It cost them about 50 million.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And, and how much did it make it worldwide, worldwide.

Speaker:

40 million.

Speaker:

Wow.

Speaker:

They lost 10 million in the times of, in the time of DVDs.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

In the time of DVDs, back when you could make your money in DVDs.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So it's a huge f It was a huge flop back then.

Speaker:

It was a huge flat back then because there was no respect for the source material.

Speaker:

Everything was kind of just, it wasn't Mario.

Speaker:

Right, right.

Speaker:

But this new movie is more.

Speaker:

Mario, like they're plumbers.

Speaker:

The main storyline is basically, I mean, everyone knows the storyline

Speaker:

of, of Mario, right, right.

Speaker:

Mario and Luigi.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

They're plumbers, they save the mushroom, kingdom bells are once

Speaker:

a merry peach, yada, yada, yada.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

But this time it's, it's, it's, it's I'll, it's, I'll say this,

Speaker:

the movie's a lot more fun.

Speaker:

I mean, I, I really think that when it comes to video game

Speaker:

movies, they made a really great choice of keeping you animated.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Live action is often difficult to replicate for video game movies.

Speaker:

Yeah, it well, because the video games are not live action themselves, right?

Speaker:

They're meant to be squishy.

Speaker:

They're meant to be fun to look at and stuff like that.

Speaker:

The character designs are not really meant to be brought to life in the

Speaker:

first place especially cartoon based.

Speaker:

Stuff, right?

Speaker:

So we saw that with the first iteration of, of salt, like the hedgehog.

Speaker:

And to be fair, I'm just gonna go ahead and, and give Mario all of

Speaker:

it stat pass that it needs to have.

Speaker:

I mean, on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics gave it a 59%, but the

Speaker:

audience score is six as 96%.

Speaker:

Now, here at Film Center, we don't care much about the critic.

Speaker:

We don't really care much about the the critics.

Speaker:

The critic can go the creek, right, exactly.

Speaker:

But.

Speaker:

Looking at Sonic when it had its first movie coming out that was

Speaker:

a 93% and the second one at 96%.

Speaker:

So then it's like, well, why do I think, I mean, obviously the Mario movie

Speaker:

has made so much more money, right?

Speaker:

Not like way more, way more, not even close, way more, very, very fast.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

So where does, where am I coming from that this Sonic is

Speaker:

probably gonna outlast Mario?

Speaker:

When it comes to theater, it comes down to two things.

Speaker:

One, the type of IP it is.

Speaker:

And number two, audience satisfaction.

Speaker:

Okay, so when it comes down to the type of ip, it is Nintendo.

Speaker:

Nintendo is known for not caring a lot about his audience.

Speaker:

Nintendo strives for perfection.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And everything that they do.

Speaker:

They have cut out.

Speaker:

I mean there was a, this isn't, like we said, this isn't the

Speaker:

first Mario movie, right.

Speaker:

It was also a Mario TV show.

Speaker:

Those things they want left buried when they people stream.

Speaker:

Nintendo product games on Twitch and stuff like that.

Speaker:

A lot of takedowns, the YouTube videos often get taken down.

Speaker:

They don't put out a lot of music either music from the games, they don't

Speaker:

allow to be played, stuff like that.

Speaker:

Almost to the point to where it seems like Nintendo isn't even really

Speaker:

friends with its audience compared to Sonic, the hedgehogs audience and

Speaker:

Sonic the way Sonic team handles it.

Speaker:

They'll let anyone just basically do anything.

Speaker:

Now, has this resulted in.

Speaker:

Some bad games.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, Sonic has not had a, had a, had a good game since Sonic Mania here in 2023.

Speaker:

But to be fair, the Sonics fan base, they'll take anything that they can

Speaker:

get, like they're not going to leave.

Speaker:

When it comes to the Mario fan base, the Nintendo expects perfection to happen.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Yeah, 100%.

Speaker:

Now, both of these, when it comes to audience scores, They

Speaker:

rank pretty similarly, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And with this Mario movie, because of how infamous the previous Mario movie was and

Speaker:

how infamous Nintendo's ability to bring Mario to the screen has been also on tv.

Speaker:

I, they pulled out all the stops.

Speaker:

I would be, it mean, you gotta look at the cast list.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

The cast list of these two don't even match at all what signed the Hedgehog.

Speaker:

They have the same audience scores, but.

Speaker:

They don't even have anywhere near the star power.

Speaker:

They do.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Well, Sonya, the Hedgehog, you're looking at the really the only E

Speaker:

lister is Jim Carey and Iris Elba.

Speaker:

No offense to James.

Speaker:

No offense to Ben Schwartz.

Speaker:

You know the voice of Sonya Hedgehog.

Speaker:

I love him.

Speaker:

And Parks and Rec.

Speaker:

James Cyclops, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

X-Men, all of 'em.

Speaker:

X-Men s Great movie.

Speaker:

And also he was also in that, this, well, first of all, I will say this, he

Speaker:

has experienced being in a movie with an animated sidekick on a, on a road trip.

Speaker:

Because wasn't he in a Hop Hop?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Remember the Easter movie?

Speaker:

Oh, the, yeah.

Speaker:

The Easter Bunny movie.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He was Peter Rabbit or something like that.

Speaker:

No, it, what's it called?

Speaker:

It was called, it was called Hop.

Speaker:

It was like the Easter Bunny movie.

Speaker:

Gotcha.

Speaker:

Remember where like the like.

Speaker:

He became like an Easter bunny or something like that.

Speaker:

I gotta admit that.

Speaker:

I mean, I, it is weird that he has experience doing this

Speaker:

exact same type of movement.

Speaker:

Exactly.

Speaker:

But at the same time, I mean, Jim Carey's the really the biggest name

Speaker:

attached to this project, right?

Speaker:

When people heard Jim Carey were gonna be in it, there was a good portion

Speaker:

of people like, oh, I'm not gonna see it cuz it's only cuz of Sonic.

Speaker:

I'm gonna see it cuz it's Jim Carey.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

And then Iris Elba only came in and Sonic too.

Speaker:

So you can't say that.

Speaker:

Oh, I mean, You know, that one does re higher.

Speaker:

That one is a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Speaker:

But when it comes to the Mario movie, I mean, you're talking about

Speaker:

Chris Pratt, Jack, black Keegan, Michael Key, Seth Rogan, Charlie

Speaker:

Day, these are all household names.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And you're, you're forgetting one very important stat that, that

Speaker:

we have not previously mentioned, that Mario has over Sonic.

Speaker:

And because it's better.

Speaker:

And that is the Peaches song.

Speaker:

Oh, the Peaches song.

Speaker:

So Jack Black, hold on.

Speaker:

Jack Black has a song called Peaches that went to number 83.

Speaker:

On the Hot 100.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Their marketing has been insane.

Speaker:

Sonic cannot say that.

Speaker:

Sonic cannot say that.

Speaker:

Although nothing Sonic had a song in the Hot 100.

Speaker:

I actually, I don't know, Ste from the city.

Speaker:

I might have to check on that.

Speaker:

I mean, There was, how old is that song?

Speaker:

It's, it's not, it's not, it's not relevant.

Speaker:

It's not as relevant as, as the featured song.

Speaker:

But listen, I like sonic racing just like anybody else.

Speaker:

You know, Mario's, Mario's marketing has been through the roof.

Speaker:

They spent all this money, right.

Speaker:

And then obviously it worked.

Speaker:

In fact, if they didn't make this kind of money bag, it would

Speaker:

be shocking and embarrassing.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Well, according to According to Variety they made, they only spent

Speaker:

about 80 million on the marketing.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So you're talking about a hundred million for the budget, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Then you're talking another 80 million for the marketing.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And to get their entire funds back, I think they're gonna need, what,

Speaker:

396 million according to mm-hmm.

Speaker:

What was that?

Speaker:

According to the daily campus break even point is 396 million.

Speaker:

So their break point is 396 million.

Speaker:

So if you look at Sonic Stacks stats, you know, when it comes to the actual

Speaker:

box office, it's not where Close, right?

Speaker:

Their first movie?

Speaker:

No, it was made for 85 and these are all from by the numbers.

Speaker:

It was made for 85 million, made back 319 million during a pandemic.

Speaker:

You know, when people were like, oh, some people say, oh, well, you know, maybe

Speaker:

that's the reason it made the money.

Speaker:

It didn't help other movies.

Speaker:

Other movies.

Speaker:

Sonic was not the only movie during the pandemic.

Speaker:

To be fair, it didn't help the other ones.

Speaker:

And then you're talking about Sonic Two.

Speaker:

Sonic Two was made for 110 110 million, made back 405 million.

Speaker:

So why didn't, why does it like, oh, why do I think Sonic's gonna outlast them?

Speaker:

I.

Speaker:

Because, well, you al you also do have to factor in the mystique of Jim Carey and

Speaker:

not, not just him as an actor, and him as a, as a force to, to reckon is, is the

Speaker:

fact that he was already semi-retired.

Speaker:

Before he did the Sonic movies.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And then also he's been acting kind of strange in the past couple of years.

Speaker:

We have some like soul searching or something, soul searching.

Speaker:

He's, I guess he's tired of being a Hollywood man.

Speaker:

He's try whatever it is.

Speaker:

Like he, he went to that award show and was like, I'm just trying to find

Speaker:

the most meaningless thing I could do.

Speaker:

And, and that's talk to the reporter he was talking to and just, yeah.

Speaker:

And so the thing is, is doing strange.

Speaker:

Things like that are, are maybe normal things, but we think they're

Speaker:

strange compared to everybody else.

Speaker:

Jim Carey might be on another level right now.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

That adds to the mystique of not only had he not done a movie in a while,

Speaker:

but he's also doing these, these, Jim Carey said he was going to retire

Speaker:

after the first Sonic movie, and then, you know, Sonic Two comes out.

Speaker:

I mean at At, at the first Sonic movie, and then he announced

Speaker:

he's gonna be a Sonic Two.

Speaker:

Then he announced he's gonna be a Sonic three.

Speaker:

My whole thing is like they paid him money.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

They paid him tons of money.

Speaker:

But my whole thing is like, I think this, this series is gonna outlast

Speaker:

because with Sonic fans, they're used to getting mediocre stuff or used to

Speaker:

things not working in their favor.

Speaker:

When something works and the Sonic team, Sonic fan base's favor, they will

Speaker:

talk about it until ends of the earth.

Speaker:

Yeah, they're used.

Speaker:

They're used to fail.

Speaker:

They're used to not really getting the best, they're used to getting

Speaker:

the short end of the stick.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Compared to Nintendo fans right Now, not saying Nintendo doesn't have any bad

Speaker:

games, because that would not be true.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I.

Speaker:

But Mario fans, Nintendo fans, they're used to things being really, really good.

Speaker:

Like, like I said, some of the games almost perfection, right?

Speaker:

Some of the games have also been bad, right?

Speaker:

However, they used to a lot of really great stuff.

Speaker:

Nintendo has failed historically when it comes to bringing things to the screen.

Speaker:

Like Legend of Zelda, they they had a TV series.

Speaker:

That was not good.

Speaker:

That was not popular.

Speaker:

You know, they have tried to bring him to film several times.

Speaker:

I, I think it was like about 12 years ago, a YouTube video was shown of a experiment

Speaker:

to see what that might look like.

Speaker:

It was some of the same guys who made the TM and T movie.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

They made some like trailer for Legend of Zella that didn't end up going anywhere.

Speaker:

So of course they have to bank everything on being perfect, right?

Speaker:

That right.

Speaker:

Have to get this star, stu cast star study cast.

Speaker:

They have to spend all this money on marketing, right?

Speaker:

Like it was a huge marketing pariah and obviously it worked, but side

Speaker:

team doesn't need to do that.

Speaker:

The it, the reality of the situation is if Mario makes a really good movie, And then

Speaker:

the next one is just, okay, like maybe the audience score drops down to like, I

Speaker:

don't think it's 70%, maybe like 75, 80%.

Speaker:

The Nintendo team is gonna drop it.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Nintendo is famous for just dropping things that are not perfect.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Instead of keeping up with it and keeping, and, and, and continue to do

Speaker:

things and keep and improving on it.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Unlike Sonic team, the Sonic team, everyone knew there was gonna be

Speaker:

a Sonic Two when Sonic came out.

Speaker:

Everybody.

Speaker:

It wasn't his secret.

Speaker:

It wasn't like, oh, we don't think they're not going to do it.

Speaker:

Unlike they're about to cross a billion dollars and there is no talk of Mario too.

Speaker:

What is the first thing anyone says when there's a successful box off box?

Speaker:

Off weekend?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

The second one.

Speaker:

Where is there gonna be a second one?

Speaker:

How?

Speaker:

How come there's no word of this.

Speaker:

Well, what's gonna be the storyline you could say about

Speaker:

any, any video game adaptation?

Speaker:

What's the storyline of the first Sonic movie?

Speaker:

It's a blue head, a first sonic video game.

Speaker:

It's a blue hedgehog that hits a guy who's shaped like an egg,

Speaker:

although he was technically robotnik, but you know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

There isn't a storyline then either.

Speaker:

You make up a storyline.

Speaker:

I, I think you, I think you make a great point, and I was

Speaker:

watching this video on John Cena.

Speaker:

He was talking about working in the wwe and there's been there, there

Speaker:

has been, and there always has been.

Speaker:

Talk of the W w E writing team, just being terrible.

Speaker:

Right, right.

Speaker:

Just, yeah.

Speaker:

And the workers, if you didn't know writing is wrestling is as fake, right?

Speaker:

It, it is fake wrestling.

Speaker:

If you, if you didn't know, the only real part is that they're really hitting

Speaker:

each other, but the rest of it is fake.

Speaker:

They're taking bumps and getting receipts and all kind of stuff.

Speaker:

Oh gosh.

Speaker:

You know, I always thought that that mat of theirs was like a bungee

Speaker:

mat or like soft or something.

Speaker:

Like it's not.

Speaker:

No, I did not know that.

Speaker:

Definitely not.

Speaker:

But anyway, what John Cena said was, he said, I have never been

Speaker:

giving a sheet of paper and thought, wow, this is brilliant writing.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

He said, it's always been writing.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's always, it, it, he said, it's not that it's gone downhill now that I'm

Speaker:

not there anymore in recent years, he said, but what I'm, what I'm saying is,

Speaker:

is I sit there and look at it and say, how can I get the best out of this?

Speaker:

Dog yeah.

Speaker:

This pile of yeah.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So I think that's what you're saying about Sonic and them, because I would

Speaker:

say that Mario doesn't have to do that.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And And Sonic does well.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, I think Mario's way better off.

Speaker:

Than Sonic is.

Speaker:

I, well, I, I think that, well, no, I think it's really the expectations.

Speaker:

I mean, the Sonic team has taken Yeah, that's what I mean though.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like Mario, if they didn't do super well, that's the thing with the Mario fan base.

Speaker:

If you didn't make it over 90%, that's a failure, right?

Speaker:

For the Sonic fans, if you would've made it 75% popularity on, on Rotten Tomatoes,

Speaker:

that would've been a win for them, right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But because it's 90, it just InVigor.

Speaker:

It's not, and invigorates, but it really inspires them to come out and see 3, 4, 5.

Speaker:

I'm just saying if the second Mario movie is not at the same height as

Speaker:

this first one, they're gonna cut it off and yeah, probably they might be

Speaker:

making a billion dollars right now, but I guarantee you there's gonna be

Speaker:

Sonic four and there's gonna be a, a more sonic after that and eventually

Speaker:

they will cross the billion dollar.

Speaker:

It's like they're, they're, they're gonna win the, it'll just take longer, right?

Speaker:

They're gonna win the, the, it's like a tortoise versus the hair here.

Speaker:

It's a, Mario will win the battle, but Sonic's gonna win the war.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Because I guarantee you, over time they're gonna make more.

Speaker:

I mean, Sonic has how many shows on Netflix now?

Speaker:

Like they had Sonic Boom and actually Sonic Boom wasn't

Speaker:

even exclusive to Netflix.

Speaker:

And then they have some new, I guess like through portals and stuff like

Speaker:

that, they have another a Sonic TV show.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

There's a whole always Sonic TV shows on it when we were kids.

Speaker:

Four W kids tv.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Sonic X, right, right.

Speaker:

Sonic X.

Speaker:

Sonic Repeatedly, the Sonic team repeatedly shows up when it comes

Speaker:

to television and entertainment for Sonic, which is probably why they were

Speaker:

so comfortable making a second movie.

Speaker:

Right, right.

Speaker:

So compared to the Mario team that has been shaking in their boots for

Speaker:

a very long time, and they had to come out big because they have not

Speaker:

responded to all this other stuff.

Speaker:

Now if you're talking about video games, it's totally different area, right?

Speaker:

Totally different area.

Speaker:

Mario is squashing in video games, galaxy, Mario's, Mario?

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

Galaxy Roll.

Speaker:

Galaxy Gala two on the seat.

Speaker:

Yo, we're not doing, we're not talking about that right now though.

Speaker:

But I, I mean, you remember Sonic Racing, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I remember Sonic Racing.

Speaker:

I remember Sonic heroes was a lot of fun.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Now again, Sonic has some good games, right.

Speaker:

But, and when it comes to filming and, and tv, the Sonic team is just more

Speaker:

willing to take the plunge and they've.

Speaker:

Made money off of it, a lot more money off of it than the Mario team has.

Speaker:

But also you like, you, like you said, like I've said, the

Speaker:

expectation is, is already down here.

Speaker:

Like it's, yeah.

Speaker:

If it, if it's a 75, if it, if it's not terrible, it's a win.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And that allows them to do it again and again, unlike Mario, one thing I

Speaker:

will say is if if they do do a sequel.

Speaker:

I'm not in like, yeah.

Speaker:

It's like, okay, well what's the storyline?

Speaker:

Well, they made up a storyline for all of 'em.

Speaker:

I mean, I never really, like when the, I heard the Sonic movie was coming out.

Speaker:

It's not like I knew what the storyline was going to be or what I could

Speaker:

imagine it being, and it definitely was way different than I thought.

Speaker:

I mean, first of all, them casting Jim Carrey, the fact that Jim Carrey's in

Speaker:

Sonic in the first place is mind boggling.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I thought that was crazy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And then like they have all these, these crazy casting decisions.

Speaker:

Ben Schwartz is, is The Voice.

Speaker:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

Then you have.

Speaker:

Freaking Iris Elba as Knuckles, but then when it comes to Mario, they knew you can

Speaker:

see exactly what they're doing, right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

They have all these names that are household names, right?

Speaker:

Even Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong Donkey.

Speaker:

Kong's not even the star, but you know, he's gonna be there.

Speaker:

And then they reference back to their video games with Sonic Race

Speaker:

with the a Mario Kart, right, right.

Speaker:

With the Rainbow Road.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So for them it's a huge advertisement, but for Sonic, it's just like another day.

Speaker:

So I really think Sonic's gonna outlast them over time.

Speaker:

I think the only way that Mario is going to In film and television.

Speaker:

In film and television, right.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I think that Get that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Get that straight.

Speaker:

First of all, get that straight.

Speaker:

I think that the best thing for the Mario team to do is just either

Speaker:

make this one movie, which I feel like I feel like they're gonna do.

Speaker:

I feel like you're just gonna just make this one.

Speaker:

Or if they do make it second one, it has to be better than the first one.

Speaker:

And here's the issue.

Speaker:

These actors are gonna wanna pay raise.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They're not gonna do it.

Speaker:

It's not gonna be, it's not gonna be made for a hundred and a

Speaker:

hundred million dollars this time.

Speaker:

Well, I mean, Chris Pratt is like the it man in Hollywood right now.

Speaker:

Hot off guardians of the Galaxy, right?

Speaker:

Volume three, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

Because that, that is really Mario's only competition right now is when.

Speaker:

Guardians of the Galaxy Three comes out?

Speaker:

Well, I think that it's more like, I think the Guardians of the Galaxy Three is

Speaker:

actually doing great marketing for Mario.

Speaker:

I mean, he's the star of both movies.

Speaker:

Well, cause they're, yeah, they're both Chris Pratt movies, so, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, dude, I think it's, I think that it's actually going to be quite helpful.

Speaker:

And then plus, everyone loves Jack Black, to be fair.

Speaker:

To be fair, Jack Black could be in like anything I would, and I would watch it.

Speaker:

I, I gotta tell you, when I found out that they cast Jack Black as Bowser,

Speaker:

I was like, that sounds ridiculous.

Speaker:

I think all of these castings made people laugh.

Speaker:

And then I saw it and I was like, All right.

Speaker:

Maybe see what you got.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Then, then he, then he scored peaches, he things like peaches

Speaker:

making these guys work overtime.

Speaker:

Right, right.

Speaker:

But yeah, this has been film sender and my prediction is that Sonic

Speaker:

will outlast them, especially, I'll tell you what, if Sonic three has

Speaker:

shadow in it, Oh, that's a wrap.

Speaker:

They're gonna make some money.

Speaker:

They're, they're going to make some money.

Speaker:

Shot at the Hedgehog.

Speaker:

The fan favorite.

Speaker:

That's everyone's fa like Sonic is great.

Speaker:

Everyone loves Sonic Knuckles.

Speaker:

Everyone loves Knuckles.

Speaker:

People would kill for shadow.

Speaker:

People do, people will do dangerous things for that character.

Speaker:

Didn't Shadow have like a, like a gun video game?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Called Shadow the Hedgehog?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He had, like, I remember had, had on the PS two.

Speaker:

He was like, he was shooting people.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I was like, what?

Speaker:

I will say this.

Speaker:

Didn't he have like roller skates too?

Speaker:

Like No, no.

Speaker:

That's just how he runs.

Speaker:

It's like a smooth, he does like these hover.

Speaker:

He like, yeah, that's just how he runs.

Speaker:

It's like he just glides.

Speaker:

Oh, okay.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And like teleports and stuff like that.

Speaker:

That is like, I will say this, like when it comes to the Mario

Speaker:

characters, they're a lot more soft.

Speaker:

Like, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

Like, like the, like the most evil person in the Mario world is, is Belzer.

Speaker:

Right then compared to Sonic, he has like, what so many enemies?

Speaker:

Was it Middle Sonic Knuckles?

Speaker:

Was Ris his enemy Shadow?

Speaker:

Dr.

Speaker:

Robotnik.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I think that's probably why they can probably get more out of it.

Speaker:

There's more range for stories compared to Mario.

Speaker:

His only real enemy is main Enemy anyway is Bowser.

Speaker:

I would Bowser, but also the storylines are a lot more plentiful in Sonic

Speaker:

than in Mario because Mario doesn't.

Speaker:

The, the storylines don't need to be plentiful.

Speaker:

It's just the same, it's the same formula.

Speaker:

They don't need it.

Speaker:

And I think that's part of the issue.

Speaker:

That's why probably they might not even make a second one.

Speaker:

Right, because it's, Hey, he saves the day.

Speaker:

Sonic has killed genies and stuff.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

He's done like a billion and a half things.

Speaker:

That's, that's why I was saying like, what, what's gonna be the plot?

Speaker:

I mean, obviously you can write one, like I'm not saying you can't, but

Speaker:

I'm saying like, we're gonna try it.

Speaker:

I bet organically.

Speaker:

If you do a really great job, which they're doing right now, what's

Speaker:

the, what's the plot of the, you know, it's, it's, you're not wrong.

Speaker:

The only thing I can imagine them do.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So I've had to pitch for Mario till I would, if I was them, I would bring

Speaker:

in I would bring in some stuff for Mario Galaxy and be like, oh, okay.

Speaker:

Now it's not only the, you know, the mushroom kingdom now

Speaker:

it's the Mario Galaxy stuff.

Speaker:

But that's about it.

Speaker:

Like I don't, I don't, I don't know.

Speaker:

Cuz they already had so many references to Mario Galaxy in the, in the movie, they

Speaker:

already saw references to Mario Odyssey.

Speaker:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

The issue is that they kind of put like, it seems like they

Speaker:

put everything in this one.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

Instead of thinking of the longevity for it which I mean, quality wise

Speaker:

worked pretty well, but if you look at the reviews from audiences,

Speaker:

it gave you the same effect.

Speaker:

Yeah, if you have a movie which people are giving over 90 or 93% or higher,

Speaker:

again and again and again, like a, a movie franchise, four or five of

Speaker:

them that have that response from the audience, only one 96% movie.

Speaker:

Even if it does make a billion dollars, this isn't gonna be enough.

Speaker:

Because right now, those, both of those song movies combined,

Speaker:

it's not a billion dollars.

Speaker:

But it is over 700 million.

Speaker:

Yeah, it took them two to do it, but if they come up with two more,

Speaker:

that's gonna cross a billion.

Speaker:

Unlike Mario, and we know that, you know, DVD sales are not what they used

Speaker:

to be, so they're gonna have to make another one if they want to compete

Speaker:

again, which, you know, that they do.

Speaker:

However, I don't think, I don't think it's gonna be a good idea.

Speaker:

What do, what do you, let me ask you a question here.

Speaker:

What?

Speaker:

What would you rather I.

Speaker:

Would you rather the smashing success of the Mario movie?

Speaker:

Like let's say it goes on to make one and a half billion dollars.

Speaker:

Okay?

Speaker:

Or two.

Speaker:

Let's say 2 billion.

Speaker:

Let's say 2 billion, okay?

Speaker:

Would you rather an absolute smash of a success for one movie

Speaker:

or have like three good movies?

Speaker:

For Sonic I personally, you know, it's, it's, it's, there's, there's

Speaker:

two thoughts to this, right?

Speaker:

One of which is like the SpongeBob versus Neptune, where he makes all

Speaker:

those crabby patties and then, you know, no one likes him with SpongeBob.

Speaker:

Makes one.

Speaker:

That's good.

Speaker:

And then it's also like, oh, well, you know, there's another thought where

Speaker:

it's like, if I make a million pots and you make one pot, the likelihood that.

Speaker:

My million pots have a bunch of better ones.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

It's more likely than you only have one good one.

Speaker:

The issue here is that both of these sonic movies have been liked a lot.

Speaker:

I would rather go for the franchise, and that sounds, I

Speaker:

mean, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

You're giving the sa, you're giving both audiences what they

Speaker:

want in the first place, right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

To show that you can repeatedly put out quality is better than

Speaker:

showing I can do quality once.

Speaker:

Amazing, amazing quality just once.

Speaker:

It's true.

Speaker:

But you're, you're, you're putting that against like years and years

Speaker:

of them doing like nothing True.

Speaker:

Hmm.

Speaker:

Like, you know, well, not by nothing, I mean like nothing when it comes to

Speaker:

entertainment television once again.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I've been killing in the fighting games.

Speaker:

Free games are awesome.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But I'd rather, I'd rather when it comes to a series and like I

Speaker:

said, that's why it's gonna be more profitable and that's why Sonic's

Speaker:

probably gonna allow out Outlast Mario.

Speaker:

But yeah, this has been film Center guys.

Speaker:

That's my prediction for Sonic versus Mario.

Speaker:

That at age old rivalry really.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And, and Mario's gonna pass a billion, I just know it is.

Speaker:

Oh, well of course it is eight, I think.

Speaker:

How do you high, do you think it's gonna get Oh, I, I could, I

Speaker:

could see it getting up to 1.5.

Speaker:

Yeah, that, that's, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

1.5 Bill.

Speaker:

I see that.
